"Can I get a quote for this?"
It's the question we hear more than any other — and it's a completely fair one to ask. But it's also one of the hardest to answer with a single number, because two cakes that look similar in a photo can take wildly different amounts of time, skill, and hands-on artistry to create. We wanted to pull back the curtain and explain how we actually think about pricing, so you can walk into a quote request feeling informed, not in the dark.
Two Ways to Order: Predesigned or Custom
Before we get into custom pricing, it's worth knowing we offer two paths.
Our predesigned cakes are exactly what they sound like — cakes we've already thought through and priced for simple, straightforward ordering. They start at $68 for our smallest 6" design (serving 12) and range up to $375 for our most elaborate two-tier predesign (serving around 36). You can personalize any predesign with your own color palette or a message, and opt to add flowers or a custom topper. These are designed for pickup only, and they're a wonderful option if you love one of our existing designs and don't need something built entirely from scratch.
Custom cakes are where we design something entirely around your vision — and where pricing naturally becomes more individual.
How Custom Pricing Works
Our custom cakes start at $10 per serving for buttercream, and $12 per serving for fondant, with a $150 minimum on our smallest size (a 6" cake, which typically serves about 12). That starting price includes a fully custom color, texture of buttercream, simple buttercream piping and a custom message — so even our base offering is never generic.
From there, pricing builds based on what you'd like added: think of the starting price as your canvas, and every additional design element as a brushstroke, each priced by the time it takes our decorators to execute it by hand.
What Actually Drives the Cost Up
This is the part people are usually most curious about — and the honest answer is detail work and time. A few examples:
Buttercream flowers add a modest amount of decorating time
2D fondant elements take a bit more — these are often multiple colors of fondant, rolled thin, hand-cut into individual pieces, and layered together to build the finished design
3D sculpted elements and hand-painted buttercream florals are some of the most time-intensive techniques we offer
Two requests that surprise people the most: painted floral cakes and 3D sculpted elements. Painted florals look effortless in photos, but they require mixing multiple custom buttercream shades, then hand-painting each petal directly onto the cake with a variety of palette knives. A fully painted, three-tiered wedding cake — or a hand-sculpted 3D element in modeling chocolate and fondant (we've brought Yoda to life this way before!) — can take the better part of a full working day for one of our decorators.
We'll also say this gently: if you're working from an AI-generated cake image, the level of detail can sometimes be more ambitious than the image-generator intended it to be practical. We're always happy to talk through which elements matter most to you and which can flex, so your dream cake and your budget can meet in the middle.
What We Need to Give You an Accurate Quote
Most people start with a photo, an invite or party decor, or a concept they love — and these are perfect starting points. To turn that into an accurate quote, we typically need:
How many servings you're looking to accommodate
Which elements of your inspiration matter most to you (and which you could live without)
Any elements of the party, celebration, or person/people being celebrated that you feel are important to recognize and incorporate into the design
Any dietary restrictions or allergies to plan around
We also love to hear about who or what is being celebrating, so that we can create something unique to them and their vibe and likeness.
Our website inquiry form is built to gather all of this information in one place — including your date, pickup or delivery preference (delivery starts at a $250 product minimum, with a $75 starting delivery fee based on mileage), and space to upload an inspiration photo. For most orders, we're able to finalize details over phone or email. For larger cakes with significant detail work, or higher-end designs, we'll often recommend a short in-person consultation — simply because it helps us get every detail right for a piece that matters this much.
A Gentle Note on Comparisons
We know it's natural to compare cake prices — but it helps to know what you're actually comparing. A grocery store cake and a fully custom, scratch-made cake from Sage Cakery aren't really the same category of product, even if they look similar in design at a glance.
One thing that's easy to overlook when comparing options: Sage Cakery is a full team, not a single artist working solo. That means your celebration isn't riding on one person's calendar — if life happens, we're able to step in for each other, so your cake is never at risk no matter what's happening behind the scenes.
We also bake entirely from scratch. We don't cut corners, and we use premium ingredients — imported European butter, organic flour, Belgian chocolate — to build a cake that's as exceptional in taste as it is in appearance.
Why It's Worth It
Here's the thing about a custom cake: it's temporary. It will be cut, served, and enjoyed — and by the end of the celebration, it's gone. It's genuinely hard for people to picture investing meaningfully in something that won't last the night.
But that's exactly why we think about it differently. Some of our most detailed designs take an entire working day for a single decorator — someone we pay real, career-level wages, because this is their craft. What you're really investing in isn't just a dessert. It's a centerpiece for a memory your family will hold onto long after the last slice is gone.
If you're ready to start the conversation, our inquiry form is the easiest first step — the more you can share about your vision and priorities, the more accurate (and fast) your quote will be.
(Curious how pricing works for custom cupcakes and dessert bars? That's a great question for its own article — stay tuned!)
